America Amplified began in 2020 as a community engagement initiative for public media, funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In 2020, we trained public media journalists across the country how to do community engagement journalism ahead of the presidential election, around which we launched a limited run national talk show. In the weeks leading up to and after Election Day, a time when we hear a lot from the politicians and traditional “experts,” we elevated and empowered community members, giving them space to discuss what was most important to them, fostering civil discourse across differences when that was otherwise absent from national air. Drawing from that experience, we wrote a playbook for community engagement journalism, available as a free online resource for journalists.
